Jerome Armstrong to Win Wellstone Organizing Award

Bumped from the diaries -- Jonathan

This is great news, demonstrating once again how far the netroots has come in such a short time since Jerome Armstrong invented it. Ha. :)

TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY DEMOCRATS ANNOUNCES 2007 HONOREES

Democratic Group Honors Jerome Armstrong with Wellstone Award; Sen. Jon Tester, Rep. Rahm Emanuel, Rep. Stephanie Herseth, Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand, Rep. Keith Ellison and Assemblywoman Karen Bass for being "extraordinary, visionary leaders"

Date: April 25, 2007

Washington, DC - Twenty-First Century Democrats, a Democratic Political Action Committee committed to electing extraordinary, visionary leaders, announced the progressive leaders it will honor at its 2007 Annual Dinner on Wednesday, April 25.  In addition to presenting the annual Paul and Sheila Wellstone Organizer Award, the group honors elected officials who exemplify the Twenty-First Century Democrats definition of extraordinary, visionary leaders.

"Our vision is one where every day in America, political leaders stand for bold and innovative ideas that solve complex problems," said Kelly Young, President of Twenty-First Century Democrats.  "It's an America where barriers to political participation are eliminated, and where power is based at the grassroots level and rests with the people."

"In order to achieve that vision, we seek out and work to elect extraordinary, visionary leaders who are courageous risk-takers committed to creating a just, tolerant, and open society," Young noted.  "This year, we honor activists and elected officials who exemplify the Twenty First Century Democrats definition of `extraordinary, visionary leadership.'"

This year's elected honorees are:

Sen. Jon Tester: In Recognition of his Authenticity and Integrity

Rep. Rahm Emanuel: In Recognition of his Commitment to a National Service Program

Rep. Keith Ellison: In Recognition of his Commitment to Peace

Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand: In Recognition of her Commitment to Governmental Accountability and Integrity

Rep. Stephanie Herseth: In Recognition of her Commitment to Bold Action on Renewable Energy

California Assemblywoman Karen Bass: In Recognition of her Commitment to Community Organizing

Additionally, Twenty-First Century Democrats announced that Jerome Armstrong will be awarded the Paul and Sheila Wellstone Organizing Award, given annually to recognize achievement in the area of grassroots organizing.  Armstrong created MyDD.com, is the co-author of Crashing the Gate, and is often credited with playing a key role in developing the progressive blogosphere.  This is the first year the award will be given to a netroots organizer.

"Jerome Armstrong helped to create the netroots, where everyone has an opportunity to engage in political action, and where power truly does rest with the people at the grassroots," said Young. "If Paul and Sheila were alive today, I know they'd be excited by the energy, passion, and commitment of the netroots, and they'd appreciate Jerome's vision which helped make it all possible."

The Twenty-First Century Democrats 2007 Annual Dinner will be held at The Galleria at Lafayette Centre, 1155 21st Street NW on Wednesday, April 25.  A 6:00pm reception will be followed by a 7:00pm dinner.  For more information, or for press or blogger credentials, contact Mark Lotwis at (202) 626-5620; mobile 703-447-3356 or mark@21stdems.org

Twenty-first Century Democrats' mission is to be the catalyst for a new progressive movement in the United States through which we ensure the next generation of elected officials are bold, forward-thinking leaders. We seek out, train, and support extraordinary leaders who are courageous risk-takers and who inspire Americans to take action.

Congratulations to Jerome, aka "The Blogfather," for a well-deserved honor!

Re: Jerome Armstrong to Win Wellstone Organizing A (none / 0)

I think they are a bit gracious in what they credit me for doing, and it's more a testament to the motivation of many to get involved than in one person making the space; but it's been a fantastic ride, and this is a honor.... OK, enough of that, who wants to rumble?

Count me in. Let's out organize them in '08, discredit the "voter fraud" fraud, craft a vision for America that includes all Americans, and turn this ship around.

'06 just whetted my appetite. Besides, I enjoy living on caffeine, chocolate and little sleep.

Can't wait for the next heated comment thread where you throw your weight around... "As the Wellstone Organizing Award Winner..." Maybe that should be the lead for everyone of your comments....

Congrats again, and like any successful quarterback, make sure to take of your offensive line (Matt, Chris, Jonathan)

Great day for the double D.

That Jerome Armstrong was not nominated for a grammy for his audio book recorded performance of "Crashing the Gate" is a disgrace!

Rahm not worthy of Wellstone award (none / 0)

As much as I applaud the Wellstone award to Jerome, I am sickened by the idea of giving one to Rahm Emmanuel.  A vassal of the corrupt Daley machine, and a firm believer that big corporate money is all that counts in political organizing, Rahm Emmanuel represents everything Paul Wellstone fought against.   I knew Paul well as a student at Carleton College, and saw him organize the rural poor of Rice County, Minnesota into an effective political organization---with no money.  The idea that Rahm should in any way be associated with Wellstone is disgusting.
