Virginia CD-1 Special Election in One Week

In case you haven't heard, there's a special election in Virginia's 1st CD just 1 week from today.  The reason I say "in case you haven't heard" is that there's been very little discussion of this race on the national progressive blogosphere, particularly in contrast with the other 12/11 special election in Ohio.  Although there's not much time left, I'm hoping we can turn that around and get some "love" for Phil Forgit in Virginia as well as for Robin Weirauch in Ohio.

Again, the election is being held in Virginia's 1st congressional district between Phil Forgit (D), Rob Wittman (R), and "true conservative" independent candidate Lucky Narain  (ha, LOVE that one!). The special was called by Gov. Kaine after the death of Rep. Jo Ann Davis (R) on October 6, 2007.  The district definitely leans Republican, with Bush/Cheney getting 54% in 2004.

Who is Phil Forgit?  From his announcement (bolding added by me for emphasis):

Mr. Forgit is a Bronze Star decorated veteran of the Iraq War, serving with a Naval Special Warfare unit as an adviser to the Iraqi Army in 2005-2006. A Naval Reservist, Mr. Forgit was mobilized from his former job as a 4th grade teacher at Rawls Byrd Elementary.

Mr. Forgit is also a nationally recognized teacher, having won the 2005 National Education Association (NEA) Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence, which included a $35,000 national prize which was awarded to him live, via satellite, while he served in Iraq. Since his return to the U.S., Mr. Forgit has used the prize money to establish ForgitFilms LLC for the purpose of making a documentary on Iraqi soldiers and their families.

[...]

Mr. Forgit ran a competitive race for the Virginia 96th District House of Delegates seat in 2003 against incumbent Melanie Rapp.  Active in Peninsula campaigns, Mr. Forgit is a member of the First Congressional District Democratic Committee and the James City County Democratic Party.

Here's something about where Forgit stands on the issues:

*  Help our veterans and military families at a time when benefits and services for veterans have been cut despite the ongoing war.
   * Secure our borders by stopping illegal immigrants from entering this country and penalizing businesses that knowingly hire them.
   * Provide tax breaks for hard-working families and small businesses, not special interests.
   * Protect the Chesapeake Bay and its watersheds.
   * Ensure a quality education and affordable health care for our children.

The one thing I strongly disagree with Forgit about is embryonic stem cell research -- he opposes it, I support it.  Also, he's personally anti-abortion but doesn't believe the government should be outlawing it.  That's about it for significant disagreements of which I am aware.

Who is Rob Wittman, the Republican nominee?  He's a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, elected in November 2005, with a very thin record.  On November 25, Wittman held a major fundraiser with a lobbyist who is a "friend and former colleague and classmate of Vice President Dick Cheney and is well connected with the Bush-Cheney administration."  Besides that, Wittman voted last spring for the widely despised "abusive driver fees" that are likely to be repealed by the Virginia General Assembly this spring.

Can Wittman be beaten?  It's hard to say, but this will be a very low turnout election just two weeks before Christmas.  That means whichever candidate gets his voters out will win.  Period.  In addition, there's some tentatively promising news, with a poll taken at the start of the race indicating that, after biographies were compared, 1st CD voters supported Forgit, the Democrat, over Wittman by a 45%-44% margin.

I'm also hearing that Gov. Kaine and former Gov. Warner are planning to stump for Forgit in coming days.  Phil Forgit himself has been very busy (see the flip) rallying voters who want to see real leadership and change in Washington.  Finally, the Forgit campaign is trying to get Wittman to commit to a debate about Iraq and military issues, but Wittman seems to have gone AWOL (in other words, Wittman is ducking debates).

The bottom line is this: Virginia's 1st CD leans Republican, but Phil Forgit can win this race -- if he gets our support and if his voters show up on December 11.  Meanwhile, Wittman is pretty much hiding (except from his Cheney-loving lobbyist buddies).

Again, Forgit just needs to get his message and his bio, both of which are excellent fits for his district, out there.  We can help him do so by contributing or by volunteering.  We can also let the DCCC that they should put serious resources into this race.  As of the third quarter, the DCCC had $28 million cash on hand, compared to under $2 million for the NRCC.  Uh, DCCC guys?  I think it's time to unload some of that $28 million in Virginia's 1st CD!   Thanks.

P.S. Here's what Phil's been up to recently:

This weekend Philip Forgit hit the road in Warrenton, Spotsylvania County and Fredericksburg to rally voters who want to see real leadership in Washington. There are lots of good photos from the campaign on Philip's Flickr site.

During the Warrenton Parade, Phiip walked up to a large group of people on the Courthouse steps and shouted, "HEY! I'm Philip Forgit and I'm running for Congress. I'm an Iraq war veteran - I just came back from helping Iraqi's vote. 80% of Iraqi's came out to vote and they had to worry about car bombs. What do you have to worry about? Come out and vote on December 11th!" At first people were surprised but then they started clapping (and we hope on Dec 11, they will be voting).

In Spotsylvania County, Philip met with voters and even stopped to help people carry bags of leaves down to the curb - this photo was not staged. Philip just likes to get things done.

In Fredericksburg, Philip made friends with folks in the crowd who walked with him for the entire parade. He strode up and down the parade lines, shaking hands and giving out over 750 candy canes.

In 7 days, you have a chance to show why Virginia is leading our country forward. On December 11, voters will head to the polls in Virginia's 1st congressional district for a special election.

Iraq war veteran and Bronze Star recipient Philip Forgit has a real chance to flip this seat for Democrats. His team is making its final decisions on advertising and field. We need to give them a boost in these final days to make sure they can reach every single voter in VA-1.

Click here to help Philip Forgit win the special election on December 11!

Philip served with a Naval Special Warfare Unit as an advisor to the Iraqi Army in 2005-2006. A Naval Reservist, Philip was mobilized from his former job as a 4th grade teacher at Rawls Byrd Elementary, where he won the 2005 National Education Association (NEA) Award for Teaching Excellence.

Philip has shown himself to be a leader of outstanding abilities -- in the classroom, in the battlefield, and now I hope you'll help me bring his leadership to Congress.  Our nation is at war, and we need leaders in Washington who know how wars should be fought -- not from theory but from experience.

Philip's military experience in Iraq will bring a much needed perspective to Congress to help end the disastrous policies of George W. Bush in Iraq. Virginians who care about the future of our military and about changing the course in Iraq will vote for Philip, but we need to make sure he has the resources to get his message to the voters.

Join me and help Philip by rushing him a contribution before next week's special election.

Just last month, Virginia Democrats won control of the State Senate and made historic gains in the House of Delegates. We need to build on that momentum by helping Philip Forgit win Virginia's 1st congressional seat next Tuesday.

Special elections hinge on voter turnout. Philip needs your help to make sure his supporters make it to the polls.

Please take a few minutes now and contribute to Philip's campaign today!

Philip is the ideal representative for the district and a much needed voice in Washington. With your help, we'll all be celebrating his victory on December 11.

Sincerely,

Wes Clark

Forget Forgit! He won't get any love from me... (2.00 / 1)

Anyone willing to jump on the anti-immigrant bandwagon isn't worth my vote, Democratic or not.  You can't take this kind of retrograde position and call yourself a progressive.  While the following is not overtly race-baiting, this sort of enforcement-only response mobilizes and empowers that portion of the electorate.  We can't be on that side.

Forgit Supports Strong Legislation to Counter Illegal Immigration, Secure Our Borders
Business and Labor Groups Support Bi-Partisan SAVE Act

Newport News, Virginia--Today Philip Forgit voiced his support for Congresman Heath Shuler's (D-N.C.) Secure America through Verification and Enforcement Act (SAVE Act) which has been introduced in both the House and Senate. The SAVE Act has the support of over 100 Republican and Democratic Members of Congress, as well as the National Federation of Independent Business and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

"I have said again and again that securing our borders and enforcing laws that prevent employers from knowingly hiring illegal immigrants must be the first step to solve the immigration crisis facing our nation," said Forgit. "Virginians are ready for leaders who rise above partisan attacks and find real solutions to the problem of illegal immigration and insecure borders. That's why I would be proud to add my support to a fellow Democrat from North Carolina in his effort to pass commonsense legislation that works."

The SAVE Act would help stop illegal immigration by securing the nation's borders, ensuring those working in the U.S. are doing so legally, and strengthening the enforcement of existing laws.

"Illegal immigration is one of the most pressing issues facing America today. It is estimated that over 12 million people are currently here illegally, and thousands more are coming in every week," said Congressman Shuler. "Americans are very upset at their government for not taking action, and they have a right to be."

The National Federation of Independent Business, the nation's leading small business advocacy group, said the SAVE Act strikes a "fair balance between increased enforcement and limiting regulatory burdens placed on small business."

The phrase is 'more and better Democrats' for a reason.  First we need to get Republicans out of office.  Then we can focus on getting better Democrats in.  We can't afford to devour our own yet.

Agreed.  I don't like the SAVE act either.  I don't agree with Phil Forgit on everything.  But what would we rather have, a Republican who is against us on EVERYTHING or a Democrat who's with us 80% or whatever?  Those are the choices, pick one.

Re: Forget Forgit! He won't get any love from me (2.00 / 1)

I wouldn't pick either.  If I lived in the district, I probably wouldn't vote in this election.  I want the race-baiters and immigrant-bashers on the other side of the aisle.  I want my party to be able to take a strong stand for an inclusive and democratic America, rather than one fragmented by race, ethnicity and citizenship status.  I want to grow our majority with Democrats I'm proud of, not just the lesser of two evils.  Democracy built on a foundation of racial and ethnic exclusion isn't really democracy.  I can't vote for that.  Good luck though.

Hey, Forgit's district (pvi R+9) is more conservative than Heath Shuler's (pvi R+7). NO way we get a D in a district like this unless our candidates neutralize hot button issues - and there's no more hot button issue in red districts than immigration.

So please be consistent. Either heart Shuler and Forgit - or don't, and hurt our chances for keeping a D majority in the House.

Re: Forget Forgit! He won't get any love from me (none / 0)

Hmmm, I never thought human rights was a "hot button issue."  You, a supposedly "progressive" democrat saying it's okay to bash immigrants calling me "inconsistent?"  Good one.

Look, you remember the populists don't ya?   You know from history? the 1890s?  These guys who had a chance to alter the course of American history, but they insisted on doing it on the basis of white supremacy.  Trouble is when black folks began to make the claim that they too had built the South and the Populist Party, their democratic and 'progressive' allies turned on them.  The Pops went down in flames and their failure helped usher in Jim Crow, a legacy we are still living with today.

It's not just important that we win, it's also important how we win.  And if we win by demonizing 'illegals,' that's not victory.  We'll only inherit another blue dog/bush dog who will sandbag our chances at a progressive majority.

And for that matter, if I lived in NC, I'd oppose Schuler too.

Re: Virginia CD-1 Special Election in One Week (none / 0)

Remember what Barney Frank said - after being attacked by GLBT groups for his compromises - http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cg i?f=/c/a/2007/10/12/MNKESOESB.DTL&fe ed=rss.news

"The question is: Can we govern responsibly? And governing responsibly means working with everybody, listening to and exchanging views with the people who care passionately ... but then as you go forward with the goals, taking reality into account," Frank said. "People who then denounce those who take reality into account ... make it impossible for us to govern."

Supporting relatively blue dogs in such districts is the reality, the only way to win in  such districts, the only way to get a sustainable majority in the House.

Re: Virginia CD-1 Special Election in One Week (none / 0)

Interesting link, but I'm not talking ideological purity here.  I'm talking having an inclusive party.  Forgit, like Schuler seems to have plain given up on compromise over immigration and both have thrown their hats in with the racist right by backing an enforcement only bill.  A compromise position would be something like comprehensive immigration reform with a path to citizenship and a reasonable and humane way for people who come to this country to work to become citizens in addition to enforcement.  (My guess is that if we had sane immigration policies and a welcoming attitude to immigrants, nearly all would become Americans and additional enforcement wouldn't be all that necessary.)  The "enforcement-only" meme is there to look tough on scary brown people, period.  That does not sound like compromise to me.

Re: Virginia CD-1 Special Election in One Week (none / 0)

Having an inclusive party means accepting such differences - as much as I hate it, accepting the loss of gun control among D candidates in the mountain west is the only way Democrats can win in that region. Having an inclusive party means understanding the fears of the workers who believe their jobs are at risk. Remember, Cesar Chavez believed in border enforcement, and marched for such.

ref http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C%C3%A9sar_ Ch%C3%A1vez
"In 1969, Chávez and members of the UFW marched through the Imperial and Coachella Valleys to the border of Mexico to protest growers' use of undocumented immigrants as strikebreakers. Joining him on the march were both Reverend Ralph Abernathy and U.S. Senator Walter Mondale.[3] In its early years, Chávez and the UFW went so far as to report illegal aliens who served as strikebreaking replacement workers, as well as those who refused to unionize, to the Immigration and Naturalization Service.[4][5][6][7][8]"

Do note that both issues address a substantial number of working class folks - Reagan Democrats who are ready to come home.
